(I will update the info on artist and title and material when i find it… maybe i can get back down there in the next few days)

Day 29

i did the Walk n’ Roll ride for HIV/AIDS awareness, this morning. i thought it was going to be a windy day- it started out that way and i was positive i would be blown off my bike, like i was on monday… my coworker saved and brought helios and me to work… such a blow to my ego… n00b, for sure.
anyway, we went extremely slow and aside from one friend who decided last minute to ride, i didn’t know anyone. that’s a lie- i knew some of the walkers but we were separated for the event. anyway, it was great- everyone riding together, talking to their neighbors, getting to know each other- having this one cause bring us all together.
unlike other runs and walks i’ve done for charities and organizations, this was the first one where i didn’t have to pay money to be in it. it was purely donation. since i just registered for the susan g. komen race and am trying to plan for the devils dash (hopefully) i couldn’t really donate more than 15$. the girl i gave my money to accepted and thanked me as though i’d just given 50$- i felt better, it’s not about how much you give, it’s that you do what you can. during the ride, i kept thinking about how each person had taken time from their weekend, their time of rest, and committed to supporting, this budding event.
when i first heard about the ride, i was a little confused. i know the AFAN AIDS walk is coming up and i thought my friend was mistaken and actually meant that. when i looked it up and saw it was a separate event, i had this small moment of stupidity and thought, “why not just pair up and make a team under afan?”
ugh. simple answer, dear: their isn’t one organization or one event, or one time of the year that people open their eyes, step out of their lives and try to raise attention and help fund for a cause!
i should be doing more, more often- get involved, volunteer. i may be a resident of vegas but i’m not what you’d call a part of the community- except for these few events that come around on designated days of the year… now when i think about it, i feel sort of nauseous. today made me want to do more.
this is a mechanical, fully functioning heart in symphony park. we passed the park, got off our bikes and took a group photo. i didn’t even notice this until my friend asked if i saw it- knowing i have a love of anything ticking.
it represents the day i had, and the sense of community i felt. we are a functioning society, and only as strong as our weakest part. i don’t want to be the weak part in the heart-piece of vegas, not when this city has been so good to me.
